COLSA’s Director of Data Science Helps Develop New CompTIA DataX Certification

In November 2022, Jay Sebastian, Director of Data Science at COLSA, traveled to CompTIA Headquarters in Downers Grove, IL, for a week to develop the CompTIA DataX certification. Jay worked alongside 11 other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from various backgrounds in industry and academia.

The team worked from the ground up to develop the exam based on this outline of exam objectives. The certification exam includes 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions, covering five different domains including Mathematics and Statistics; Modeling, Analysis and Outcomes; Machine Learning; Operations and Processes; and Specialized Applications of Data Science.

“It was an honor to work with this team and develop a useful tool for validating the most competent Data Scientists in the industry. While we created some rigorous standards, we believe the individuals who receive this certification will stand out as highly qualified data scientists. We all agreed that this was a challenging exam, and that it would separate the wheat from the chaff in our field.” – Jay Sebastian, Director of Data Science at COLSA

CompTIA aims to solidify the understanding of critical data tools and concepts, and the DataX certification team ensures this level of excellence. Alongside COLSA, the DataX team includes names like Chapman University, Cisco, IBM, and OCTO Technology as developers.

According to CompTIA, the DataX certification is the premier vendor-neutral Data Science certification, confirming a consistent skill set that meets an ever-growing demand for highly skilled data scientists. The certification is targeted toward Data Scientists with at least 5 years of experience in the field, with a broad understanding of mathematics, modeling and analysis, machine learning, operations and processes, and specialized applications of data science.

The beta exam launched in 2023, and the official DataX certification will be live soon.
