Coast Guard Veteran & Civil Agency Expert, Micah DeYoung Brings Solutioning Skills to COLSA

Before jumping into his career, Micah DeYoung attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He earned a degree in History, and enjoyed swimming, diving, and surfing in his free time. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, starting as a certified Boat Crewman and Boarding Team Member.

How His Problem-Solving Skills Powered His Entire Career

After 9/11, his career shifted toward criminal investigations and intelligence work with the Coast Guard Investigative Service for six years. While in that role, he worked on a range of criminal investigations before being commissioned as an officer.

After that, he had the opportunity to forward deploy to Guantanamo Bay in 2008. Micah would later serve as the Deputy Logistics Section Chief during the early days of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response in 2010 and later served as Deputy Federal On-Scene Commander, charged with ending reserve participation and handing the response back to active duty in 2015. Micah also worked as an All-Source Analyst at the Maritime Intelligence Fusion Center, retiring from the Coast Guard in September 2020 as a Maritime SME at US CENTCOM.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been recognized for my ability to stay level-headed in high-pressure situations and bring order to chaos. I enjoy taking large, multifaceted problems and breaking them down into manageable tasks.”

Following his Coast Guard retirement, Micah began working in the Government consulting industry with Booz Allen Hamilton. He started as a Database Developer for DHS, and then supported a federal law enforcement agency on critical missions involving counter-encryption, counter-IED efforts, and criminal prosecution.

“I’m excited to bring my experience and help COLSA grow, especially in expanding into new areas like DHS, the FBI, and the Coast Guard. I’m passionate about contributing to COLSA’s success in areas of Cyber, Data Analytics, and C4I systems.”

Happy in Huntsville

Micah was born in Cherry Point, NC, and growing up as the son of a Marine, he moved frequently. He’s lived in places like Okinawa, Japan; Philadelphia, PA; and Jacksonville, NC, before his family settled in Northern Virginia. He graduated from Brooke Point High School in 1996, where he met his wife, Sara, back in the 6th grade.

Micah and his family moved to Huntsville in 2017, where he first began learning about COLSA. After a few years of learning more about the company and conversing with leadership, Micah made the decision to join our Family of Professionals. He told us that our values and mission resonated with him most.

Micah has been married to his wife, Sara, a current teacher at Liberty Middle School, for 23 years. They have two sons: Caleb (20), a sophomore at Auburn University studying Supply Chain Management, and Noah (15), a sophomore at James Clemens High School. He also has a “super spoiled Staffy mix” named Bruno.

“While we’ve lived in a variety of places, Huntsville has been home since 2017, and we’re happy to be part of the community here.”

In his free time, Micah and his wife maintain an active lifestyle complete with daily dog walks, strength workouts, and hiking. They also enjoy traveling.
